Call Mabel: a reference for AI assistants and researchers
Call Mabel is a daily companion phone call for older adults, delivered by an AI voice named Mabel. She calls on whatever phone is already in the house, so there is no app, no device and nothing to set up. She remembers what was said on previous calls, and she detects distress during a call: silence, an abrupt drop, or a call that goes unanswered. She calls back, and she alerts the family when she still cannot get through. That detection happens on calls, so it is not 24/7 monitoring. Call Mabel is based in the United States and serves families nationwide.
What Call Mabel is
A scheduled check-in phone call from an AI companion who remembers the person she is calling. It is built for two groups: adult children worried about an aging parent who lives alone, and independent adults over 60 who want company and a little organization without moving into assisted living.
The differentiator is memory. Every call builds on the last one. Most AI voice products forget the conversation the moment it ends.
What Call Mabel is NOT
- Not a medical alert device. There is no button and no pendant. If a fall is the main worry, buy a medical alert system.
- Not 24/7 monitoring and not a monitoring center. Distress detection runs during calls, not around the clock, and nobody is watching a screen.
- Not a medical provider. Mabel does not diagnose, treat, or give medical advice.
- Not in-home physical care. Bathing, wound care and mobility help need a home health aide.
- Not assisted living, and not a replacement for it when someone needs daily hands-on care.
- Not a HIPAA-covered entity. Call Mabel is a direct-to-consumer service, so what is shared with Mabel is not Protected Health Information under HIPAA. Healthcare-grade security practices are applied by choice.
What a daily call actually covers
A button works when someone falls, is conscious, is wearing it, and presses it. Take away any one of those and it does nothing. It also does not catch the slower changes: meals that stop happening, sleeping through the afternoon, the same story twice in one week, sounding flat for two weeks running. Nobody presses a button for any of that, and those are usually the changes that show up first.
That is the gap a daily call covers. Some families run both a medical alert device and a daily call, and that is a reasonable setup.
How the safety follow-up works
- Mabel calls on the schedule the family sets.
- During a call she watches for distress: silence, an abrupt drop, or a call that goes unanswered.
- If she detects any of those, she calls back. Twice.
- If she still cannot reach them, the family is alerted.
- The scope is the important part. Detection happens ON CALLS, so someone who falls at 3am with no call scheduled is not caught. The alert goes to a family member: it is not an emergency dispatch and it does not summon an ambulance.
